Don’t let smoke get in your eyes!

Did you know..?

  • that smoking doubles your chances of losing your sight?
  • that when you inhale smoke, thousands of chemicals get into your bloodstream and can travel throughout your body?
  • How these chemicals can affect your eyes?

A study of over 20,000 physicians aged 40-84 who were also smokers confirmed a direct link between smoking and the development of cataracts (a clouding in the lens which may vary from slight to complete darkening of vision.) Although cataracts are treatable and therefore do not lead to blindness, they remain a major cause of sight loss.

Smoking increases your chances of developing macular degeneration, a deterioration of the central vision necessary for recognizing familiar faces across the room, or reading a printed page. It can result in blindness in one or both eyes. Smoking is the greatest preventable risk for developing age-related macular degeneration.

Smoking causes shrinkage or constriction of blood vessels which increases inner eye pressure and is linked to glaucoma. Glaucoma is a disease which damages the optic nerve, which can lead to permanently damaged vision in the affected eye(s).

Smoking can worsen eye problems resulting from diabetes. Diabetic neuropathy, as it is called, is a disease caused by high blood sugar which can damage the blood vessels that supply your retinas (Diabeitc Retinopathy). The retina is a specialised layered structure at the back of your eyes and is responsible for your overall vision.

Whilst some of these eye diseases can be treated, for others the damage is irreversible.

The Good News!

Some eye problems caused by smoking begin to improve as soon as you stop smoking, and will continue improving as long as you remain a non-smoker.

YOU WILL SEE BETTER AND LIVE LONGER IF YOU STOP SMOKING!
